This community of practice (CoP) was hosted and filmed on the 30th of November 2023. Delegates agreed that they wanted this CoP to convene again in 2024.
Description
This community of practice explores one of the key recommendations of the Food Insecurity Project launched at the Food Summit in September 2023, which encourages more place based collaboration, e.g. through local Food Partnerships, Networks, Alliances or Taskforces to improve co-ordination of effort, to increase the reach of local food provisions into their communities, so that they meet the needs of more people that are food insecure or at high-risk.
Jonathan and Carol from Craven Food Partnership provide practical insights about what it’s been like to form a local collaborative model, their experiences, the benefits and challenges that come with it, as well as their future ambitions.
We also hear from Dr Megan Blake, always inspiring, about the Food Ladders Framework she has authored. This is incredibly helpful to help us think about how to cater not only for individuals in crisis and severe need around food but also how to build community capacity and encourage self-organising in an intentional way, making the very best of local strengths and energy. This means that at any one time in any given place, it is possible to build local food access provision such that different people can get the support they need. Importantly, they can also contribute, feel connected and feel increasingly resilient because the ‘foodscape’ in that place supports such a journey. Megan’s team at the University of Sheffield is producing a resource (a toolkit) in 2024 – that can help more places take practical action using the Food Ladders approach, which we will be certain to publicise and share across York and North Yorkshire once available.
